چکیده

Following our previous report concerning the development of a 127 μm resolution, 7.4 million pixel, 30 x 40 cm active area, flat panel amorphous Silicon (a-Si) x-ray image sensor, this paper describes enhancements in image sensor performance in the areas of image lag, linearity, sensitivity, and electronic noise. New process improvements in fabricating a-Si thin film transistor (TFT)/photodiode arrays have reduced first-frame image lag to less than 2%, and uniformity in photoresponse to < 5% over the entire 30 x 40 cm active area. Detailed analysis of image lag vs. time and x-ray dose will be discussed. An improved charge amplifier has been introduced to suppress image cross-talk artifacts caused by charge amplifier saturation, and system linearity has been optimized to eliminate banding effects among charge amplifiers. Preliminary sensitivity improvements through the deposition of CsI(Tl) directly on the arrays are reported, as well as overall imaging characteristics of this improved image sensor.

Radiation damage studies of amorphous-silicon photodiode sensors for applications in radiotherapy X-ray imaging

The high radiation tolerance of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si : H) is one reason it has become a candidate for high-energy physics applications and for radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging. The performance of 1 [,m and 5 [Lm a-Si : H n-i-p photodiode sensors used in conjunction with Lanex (Gd 202S : Tb) intensifying screens has been measured as a function of high-energy photon dose . Over...

A quality assurance program for an amorphous silicon electronic portal imaging device using in-house developed phantoms: a method development for dosimetry purposes

Background: Electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) play an important role in radiation therapy portal imaging, geometric and dosimetric verifications. A successful utilization of EPIDs for imaging and dosimetric purposes requires a reliable quality control process routine to be carried out regularly. In this study, two in-house phantoms were developed and analyzed for implementation in a qua...

Large-area Amorphous Silicon Tft-based X-ray Image Sensors for Medical Imaging and Non Destructive Testing

Large-format digital x-ray image sensors are a recent development in the fields of medical imaging and non-destructive testing. Such image sensors have become practical through the emergence of large-area, amorphous Silicon (a-Si) TFT and photodiode technologies (1,2). This paper will review the fundamental requirements for such x-ray image sensors, and discuss some of the device requirements f...

New Amorphous-Silicon Image Sensor for X-ray Diagnostic Medical Imaging Applications

This paper introduces new high-resolution amorphous Silicon (a-Si) image sensors specifically configured for demonstrating film-quality medical x-ray imaging capabilities. The device utilizes an x-ray phosphor screen coupled to an array of a-Si photodiodes for detecting visible light, and a-Si thin-film transistors (TFTs) for connecting the photodiodes to external readout electronics. We have d...

Amorphous Silicon Flat Panel Imagers for Medical Application

A new gamma camera based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) pixel arrays to be used in nuclear medicine is introduced. Various performance characteristics of a-Si:H imagers are reviewed and compared with those of currently used equipment. An important component in the a-Si:H imager is the scintillator screen. A new approach for fabrication of high resolution CsI(Tl) scintillator layers,...
